Kaziranga

Wild, wild world

One horned rhinos is the image that comes first to our minds when we mention Kaziranga National Park, but this lush, untamed belt of the region, is big on a large variety of mammals, including tigers, elephants, panthers and bears, and thousands of birds.
The vast expanses of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests, crisscrossed by four major rivers, make for an entrancing experience. The numerous small bodies of water inside the park, wetlands, patches of mixed deciduous forests and chars of river islands formed by the shifting course of the mighty Brahmaputra, make it a perfect habitat to house two-thirds of the world’s rhinos, a subject of several books, songs, and documentaries.
But Kaziranga is much more, the laidback village life around, the handicrafts of the region, the innumerous stories that speak of the rich local culture, are as much Kaziranga as the one horned rhino. As you sit on the machan of your retreat, letting an entire afternoon slip by, with just some cool breeze, watching a villager navigate with his little boat in the creek, fishing for the catch of the day, you wonder, if there was anything more you could ask for.
